Pros and Cons of a Disney Cruise

disney magic cruise ship

But while Disney didn’t have the initial longevity that other cruise lines boasted, it quickly caught up. Today, you can still experience all the wonder of that very first cruise ship, with a family cruise aboard Disney Magic. Other events include a movie marathon, a costume night, and special stunt show that features fireworks and incredible stunts on the ship deck.

Ahead of the 25th Anniversary her maiden voyage, the Disney Magic is fresh out of a 21-night dry dock in Freeport, Bahamas. The fleets first ship spent most of the time out of the water for routine cleaning, paint, and upgrades. Leading up to the dry dock, Disney Cruise Line was quiet, only mentioning they would be converting a block of staterooms on deck 8 to concierge level. The Soul Cat Lounge (near Rapunzel's Royal Table restaurant/aft on deck 3) is designed to resemble Half Note Lounge from the movie (Joe Gardner's favorite music spot). Table-side are served local brews, signature cocktails (made with New York spirits), a selection of mocktails, brand coffees, sodas, zeppoles (Italian fried doughnuts).

Our turn in Animator's Palate happened on the final night of our cruise, so the entire wait staff came out for a round of well-deserved applause with Mickey, and it was honestly pretty emotional. All original four Disney ships have a version of Animator's Palate, though it varies a bit on each ship. Dry-dock refurbishments are a pretty routine occurrence, taking place every five years or so. Keep up your workout routine (and burn off the four desserts you ordered at dinner last night) in the Fitness Center.

Both Vibe and Edge are come-and-go clubs that don't scan your kids in and out or track them with any sort of band. Youth staff lead organized activities and games in Edge at certain times during the day, but it also serves as a casual tween hangout spot the rest of the time. There's no fee and no reservations required to come and play in these clubs.

The Soul Cat Lounge is adorned with custom artwork from Pixar featuring nods to the film including record labels, concert posters and portraits of jazz legend Dorothea Williams and her bandmates. Thoughtful “Soul”- inspired details are subtly layered throughout the design including record players, instruments and Joe’s hat. The big upgrade to the ship was shore power technology which was installed as part of the ship’s dry dock project. This is part of Disney Cruise Line’s longtime dedication to minimizing its impact on the environment. When available at the port, this will allow the Disney Magic to “plug in” to the port’s electrical grid, reducing the ship’s emissions. While this cruise ship may be the very first of its kind, it hasn’t lost its luster since its debut more than two decades ago.

Disney Dream

On a chilly January morning, my family and I packed our Mickey ears and made the two-hour drive to the ship's winter home port of Galveston, Texas, ready to find out how Disney Magic stands up to the other ships in the fleet. Believe it or not, it's been almost 25 years since Magic first set sail in 1998, so it truly is an older ship by U.S. cruise line standards. Even these fancier nights lean more toward the casual side, with many women dressed in summer or maxi-dresses as opposed to long, formal ones. Swimwear and tank tops are not allowed in the restaurants at dinner, but shorts and jeans are permitted. On short cruises, there will be one "optional dress up" night, which is generally semiformal. On a seven-night cruise, there will be one "formal" night in addition to a semiformal night.

It’s a secure facility accessible only to kids aged 3-10 and trained youth activities staff. Inside there are tons of kid-friendly spaces and activities, and it’s all included in the cost of your Disney cruise! This amazing kids club is one of the reasons we consider Disney to be the best cruise line for children. It’s a well-known fact that cruises feature virtually endless food options, and the Disney Magic is no exception. With three sensational main dining restaurants, an elegant adult-only dining option, and plenty of places to grab a quick meal or a snack on the go, you certainly won’t go hungry onboard this ship.

For the first time ever, Disney offered UK cruise departures (from Dover England) to ports in Baltic Sea (incl Norwegian Fjords), Iceland, UK (British Isles). Throughout 2016 summer, the ship operated in the Western Mediterranean (leaving from Barcelona). These unique for DCL itineraries (called "Sea Staycations") were open for booking by UK residents-only and without any call ports.

The beer package onboard also comes with a Disney Cruise Line-branded beer stein mug. Because most passengers are fans of the Disney company, similar to planning a visit to one of Disney’s theme parks, passengers tend to invest more time into planning their cruise vacation simply because there is a lot to know. I have found that sailing with Disney Cruise Line involves a bit more planning a preparation than other cruise voyages. Onboard my Disney Fantasy cruise, I was able to see three different Broadway-style theater shows, all of which were fun and featured a talented cast of performers.

Additionally, sailings from San Diego to Baja California or eastbound to Galveston (and vice versa) through the Panama Canal are also available. Disney Magic no longer offers Mediterranean and Bermuda cruises; those are now available onboard sister ship Disney Dream. Even with its updates, the Disney Magic cruise ship retains a sense of tradition. Like its fleetmates, the vessel sports a nostalgic ocean liner appearance with a navy-blue hull and red funnels (customized with Mickeys, of course).

The clothing requirements are actually the same for both formal and semiformal nights; the biggest difference is on formal night when the characters also dress up for photos. Your cruise won’t cost a penny more than if you’d booked it yourself — and it might even cost less! As a matter of fact, one of the many reasons to book with a Disney travel agent is their excellent knowledge of all the latest discounts. This comedy explores the idea of time-traveling (!) wicked stepmothers and stepdaughters (thanks to help from, who else, a wicked Fairy Godfather) trying to destroy the glass slipper and wreck Cinderella’s marriage. A touching tale of a young girl at the age of not believing – follow along as she learns how to believe in herself thanks to the power of positive thinking along with some help from favorite Disney characters and memorable music.

Themed as a top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, this area gives kids the chance to summon their inner Super Hero (and visit with a few real ones, too!). There’s plenty of time for freeform play, and occasional structured activities. Karaoke, trivia, game shows, and even dance parties can be found here on a daily basis. Breakfast and lunch are casual affairs onboard – and one of the best places to enjoy these meals is at Cabanas. They’ll walk you through all the options, answer your questions, make your reservations for you, and share money-saving tips. Verandah staterooms offer a private outside balcony which can be accessed through sliding glass doors.

It’s not buffet style at night – you’ll have a server at your table – but it’s a nice alternative if you’ve had your fill of the main dining rooms on a longer cruise. It won't come as a surprise to many that Disney cruises can be rather expensive. Perhaps my personal least favorite part of a Disney cruise is the rotational dining system in which guests are assigned to a specific dining room, seating time, and table each night of their cruise.

All Disney Magic suites are located on Deck 8 and feature concierge service, deluxe design elements, huge Jacuzzis, better quality mattresses and large verandas (among the additional amenities are robes, slippers, and a vanity pack). It doesn't feel old, but it is smaller and a touch more quaint than the line's newest ships. I found it easier than on Wish to simply enjoy what comes with the experience instead of feeling like you need to spend $10, $20, $50 or more several times a day to get the full experience. The teen club, Vibe, is open for to those ages 14 to 17, though you can get in a year early with parent permission, which is what my 13-year-old chose.

Mouse ears and costumes are encouraged, and you'll see little princesses and pirates roaming the ship, as well as Marvel costumes during Marvel Day at Sea; adults often dress up for the latter, as well as Pirate Night. Exclusively for guests aged 13-17, this special area of Senses offers treatments to teens. A parent or guardian must accompany the teen for the duration of the treatment (solo and combined treatments are offered as an option). The tiniest cruisers are well taken care of in it’s a small world nursery! A favorite of younger Oceaneers, the Disney Junior area features games, characters, and more.
